Elephant Steps, a rescue center for more than 600 animals and humans

Elephant Steps is not a tourist attraction. It is a living rescue center, healing, and coexistence for animals and for humans.

More than 600 rescued animals now call this place home: 4 elephants, dogs, horses, donkeys, cows, and many others who were abandoned, abused, injured, or left with no one to protect them. Each animal is received, fed, treated, loved, and given the time they need to heal. Here, no life is disposable. Every being matters.

Nestled in the mountains and jungle of Northern Thailand, Elephant Steps was created as a space of freedom, safety, and dignity for those who have known suffering. It is a place where trauma is met with gentleness, where fear slowly becomes trust again.

The sanctuary is home to four rescued elephants, formerly exploited for labor or tourism. Today, they live without chains, hooks, rides, or performances. They walk freely through the jungle, bathe in the river, forage, and rest as they choose. There are no baskets, no shows, no forced interactions. The elephants are not here to entertain—they are here to live.

At the heart of Elephant Steps are its founders:
Sophie, a French woman who has lived in Thailand since 1991, and Moumou, a Karen man from the local hill tribe. Together, they have built not just a sanctuary, but a family—made of animals, humans, and shared values. They live surrounded by those they protect, deeply connected to the land, the jungle, and the rhythm of life.

Their vision is simple yet powerful:
to create a place where humans and animals heal together, where respect replaces domination, and where care is the foundation of everything.

“It is a real joy for us to see our elephants free, at home and in the jungle. And it is this joy that we wish to share with visitors who are curious to see these symbolic animals of Thailand in their natural environment. True contact with an animal does not happen while sitting on a basket that hurts its back. Our elephants are intelligent, but they are not circus animals. We meet each other in mutual respect.”

Elephant Steps also extends its care beyond the center through meaningful partnerships:

  • "ABCD Pour Tous", which supports underprivileged children in mountain villages of Northern Thailand.

  • "Kat Pat – Le Pas des Éléphants", which helps abandoned animals and provides vaccination and medical care in those same villages.

Part of the income from ethical jungle experiences is reinvested to support these initiatives—so every visit becomes an act of solidarity and compassion.

At Elephant Steps, you are not a spectator.
You are a guest in a living rescue center.

This is not about tourism.
This is about care, connection, restoration, and coexistence.
